l, overlooking the modern -day city of Haifa. It is a richly forested area and it is known for its cover of flower blossoms, flowering shrubs and fragrant herbs. The meaning of Carmel can be something like “park” or “fertile ground”. It is referenced most often as a symbol of beauty and fertility. On Mount Carmel prophet Elijah encountered God in prayer and pleaded for the people of Israel. He prayed on the submit of Carmel fervently that it might not rain and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again and the heaven gave rain and the earth brought forth its fruit. So Mount Carmel is a sacred place- A meeting place of God and His people. Carmel is the symbol of the contemplative life, the life wholly dedicated to the quest for God, wholly oriented towards intimacy with God. The feast of our Lady of Mount Carmel recalls the foundation of the Carmelite Religious Order in the 12th century. Towards the end of the 12th century a group of hermits established themselves on Mount Carmel and built a Monastery in honour of Mother Mary whom they chose as their Patroness. They regarded the Blessed Virgin Mary as their Mother and their model, first of all in leading a contemplative life and later in sharing the fruits of their Contemplation with others. The feast of our Lady of Mount Carmel is an occasion of thanks giving for the countless blessings which Mother Mary had bestowed on the Carmelite Order. So we also express our heartfelt gratitude to our Blessed Mother Mary for the abundance of blessing she showers on our Carmel family. Under the protecting care of our beloved Mother Mary we feel safe and secure in the midst of troubles and tribulations. So 16th July is celebrated as Carmel Day in all of our Institution.
